Read PeiChin's blog. She wrote on Coach Carter. I watched this movie twice. Once with Zhenyue, once with Eugene and family. The first scene reminded me and Zhenyue on Sembawang Secondary School. Hahaha.

I will like to post this lines from the movie too. Hope it serves as an encouragement.

These two days are super boring. Hahahah. I think a better desciption should be "less happening". I guess I will not find NIE as boring if I had not experience the exciting life of teaching.

However, I am thankful for this time as I have more time to reflect on what had happened. It is my time of SPA (Stop, Ponder, Align).

The "almost" gate-climbing experience

One particular day during the march holiday, I went back to school to get some work done.

Now, Sembawang Secondary School has two gates. The side gate is nearer to the mrt station than the main gate. Thus, entering by the side gate is often preferred by most people.

That particular day, however, the side gate was locked because of school holiday. I still remember the heart-sinking feeling when I saw the gate tightly locked by thick metal chains and a steady lock. To go in by the main gate will require me to go a round-about-way which is about 2km( I think) walk. Sigh...

At that instant, I really wanted to climb the school gate like how I did during my secondary school and Junior College days... I was in my jeans and not the usual teacher's clothes, so it is physically possible. But what if while I was climbing the gate when suddenly someone called me? Then I lost my footing and fall? That will be totally embarassed. So finally, I decided against the idea.

So I switch to Plan B. I decided to walk the dirty grass patch instead of taking the round-about-way. As I was walking, I sort of regretted it. It was so unglam for a teacher to walk this type of muddy glass patch. Too bad I was half way through already.

Suddenly, someone shouted "Is that Miss Tay?"
That was totally embarassing! I juz kept looking down and hope I can be camouflaged some way.

Hahahah..... Miss those school days when I can be totally unglam and uncool...

Practicum recounting

I am going to start blogging again. Yes Yes...I am still alive in this world. I am enjoying the practicum that God had allow me to go through...

Next week is my last week of practicum. Hee...will miss my students and the fun I get. As I had always told my friend Miss Choo Beng Hoon, I plan and execute lessons for my own pleasure. Hahahah...What a sadist! My students can attest to that, I guess....

Tribute to my NIE friends

This space is specially dedicated to my friends in NIE. I want to say that you all had made my NIE days very enjoyable!

I recall the time when we had our orientation as Group K. I still remember the incident when our "egg" was cataputed for a distance of 6 trees. hahahah. That was the most spectacular and hilarious moment ever.

I recall the times when we had the psychology class discussion. I enjoyed the times with the xiao2 zai2 po4s in my group, Delvinia, Peishan and Poh Keow. Not forgetting the slacker who forgot to bring everything to class (not even pen) Mr Teo Koon Soon. Thanks for at least bringing some joy to us.

I recall the times when we had Bible studies under the umbrella bench. Started initially with Del, Peishan and Koon Soon. But in the end, only left with PeiShan and myself having coffee fellowship in the library.

I recall the times we played badminton on wednesday during the 6 hours break. With Del as my coach (Del, you are a great coach! You will make a good teacher), Chu Xian and Kevin as the jokers, Soon Yong as the ou3 xiang4 (idol), Poh Keow and Kai Xuan.

I recall the time we went to Delvinia's house to play mahjong and watch Stephen Chow's show.

I recall the few free rides I had from Kai Xuan with Del and from Andy with the boys (Gan Hup, Vincent and Sito) I recall the times when Kai Xuan tortured us with his thick-skin remarks and del and I then treated him to a surround-laugh-system. I recall the times when the boys cracked cruel jokes about me.

Not forgetting the chats with mr SJI good boy, Terrence and the drunkard cum ah beng Derrick.

Very anxious about practicum. So afraid that the kids will run around in my class and I can't control them at all. Hahahah.

Teachers' greatest nightmare!!!

I heard, that will be a straight-fail for practicum. Hee... But I think I shouldn't be so jia lat lah...

So, I asked my church teenager, Glenn (15 years old) for advice. He gave me 3 advices:

1) Wear nice nice. If the kids think you are chio, they will pay attention.
2) Dun be boring. Play games. But dun play lesson-related games.
3)Dun scold people. Be friendly.

So Jia lat. Glenn wants his teachers to be like customer-service officers or entertainers. Wear nice nice and play games.

Duh... Hahahaha...

5 Days of Celebration

This entry is a bit out-dated(again...). This entry will simply be a record of how I celebrated my birthday. Hahahah. I celebrated my birthday for almost a week. Hahahah. Sounds like celebrating Chinese New Year in advance.

My actual birthday is on the 18th Jan. But the celebration period is 16th Jan to 20th Jan. Wow!

16th Jan (Sun)-- 1)Jia Jia bought me a pair of earrings (those dangling dangling type) after church when she found out my birthday is in the following week. 2) Eve asked me why I never tell her in advance, so that she can bake a cake for me. I was so touched that my sunday school girls are so sweet. Hee... 3) My family brought me to eat streamboat. So happy... There was a little hiccup when my mother insisted that eugene join us. She called eugene and asked him to come immediately. My father even had to stop eating and drive to fetch him. Made me so embarrassed.

17th Jan (Mon)-- 1) Huiying, Vincent, Alan and Eugene brought me out for dinner. It happened to be Huiying's father's opening day for his western food stall.So we went there for free food. Hahaha. The food is yummy yummy. We had endless supply of chicken wings, spare ribs , potato wedges, salad and pizzas!!! I found out that Huiying's father once own Milano Pizza. No wonder the food is so fantastic!

18th Jan (Tue)-- 1) My NIE physics friends were very sweet. Actually, the moment I entered the lecture hall, I knew they had installed something. First hint- my beloved Peishan told me that she will meet me outside the LT after my lecture (She is not even in my lecture group!). Secondly, my friends were more talkative and excited than usual. Thirdly, Del was carrying something that looked like a present. So throughout the lesson, I asked the boys (Kevin, Chuxian, Derrick, Terrace etc) if they were preparing some "firecrackers" for me?! hahahah. After the lecture, I went out of the lecture hall ( I purposely walked so slowly so that Iwill be last to get out) and saw them holding a slice of cake. Yay! So I got my cake, birthday song and present. But where was my lion dance? Requested for Derrick to be the lion, Peishan to be the big-head doll and Chuxian be the ball. But they juz won't obliged. Well...

At night, I met up with eugene near my unhappening home. Ate at the unhappening coffeeshop. Went to the unhappening playground. I bought some sparklers (my favourite), candles to play. So we spent the evening doing the unhappening stuff, but I felt happy. Hee... Taking pleasure in the everyday mundane things...

19th Jan (Wed)-- Met up with Dixuan (St Nicks' good friend) for some Bible Studies, dinner at Hans and coffee & cakes at starbuck. Time with old friends is always relaxing and worthwhile.

20th Jan (Thurs)-- Met up with PeiChin (University's good friend) and Jielin (HCJC's good friend) for dinner at Billy Bombers. They are also from St Nicks and are each other good friends from Sec Two. Small World!

Yup! That's all for the recounting.
Btw, I am not afraid of birthdays, cos I dun remember my age anyway. Hahaha.

Imagine this:

You are at the beach. Phuket Beach. You are walking along the shore. The waves are so gentle and they break at your feet. After a while, you realise it is not breaking at your feet, but the tides are retreating. "Low tide", you think to yourself. After a while, you realise the sealine seems to have retreat by really a lot. You look at the horizon. Today seems a bit different from usual.

Then you see something. It is quite hard to describe. It is almost like a piece of wall, made of water coming towards the shore. That is a wave, a very big wave, extending from infinitely left to infinitely right.

"That's tsunami!" You hear a little girl shouting! You are quite sure it is going to be disastrous.

What will you do?

1. Run away from the sea! As quickly as possible!

2. Stand there. Too stun to move.

3. Think: "Since I cannot outrun the wave, I shall run towards it"

* Readers, dun get me wrong. I am not trying to be funny. I juz wanna point out that although none or few people will choose Option 3, but many people actually have the-

"Tsunami come, I will die anyway, so I run towards it" mentality.

cheem cheem...dun understand?! Juz look around you, some people have this thinking:

"Since our passion, ideal is going to be extinguished by the harsh society after we step out of the shelter of school, why don’t we do the society a favour and extinguish it ourselves first instead."

Understand my point now?

Question: " To think this way, will we be the victims of the "harsh society" or the accomplices of it?"

So, I still choose to hold on to ideals. Not that I am naive enough to think they will be fulfilled. But I believe we need something internal and unwaving that will sustain us. The external circumstances will still try to erode us, but at least we won't allow it.

This is the most dreaded time of the year-

Eugene goes ICT (In Camp Training) for a week.

He described it as going chalet. The dresscode is their No.4. hahahah.

Anyway, the preparation for (the err...what? oh...)ICT is quite jia lat. Need to pack a lot of things, then hor, the things must be labelled big big with numbers, then hor, must put in transparent ziplop bags. Then, hor, must be arranged in such a way that the items can be seen clearly from the outside (without opening the ziplop bag). So in-perfect-order, so erm...regimental.

So yesterday, Eugene was busy packing his green bag with green stuffs while I held his handphone and became his personal secretary.

Some smses I help him sent/received read like this:

"need to pack how many No.4?" & "got night-off a not"

Sigh....dun understand about army. Btw, what do guards do? hahaha. Stand outside the president house and guard the place?

I am currently suffering from some throat inflammation that renders me voiceless for a while.
Serious! Dun laugh! Hahahha...

Well, so I devised 2 methods to communicate.

First Method: You talk, I write

Meaning, I communicate by writing on a notepad that I carry around with me . This method can only be used when I am sitting down or at least stationery. Like on the bus, mrt or in the classroom.

Second Method: You talk, I sms

I am not being impolite. Dun get me wrong, I am juz trying to press my handphone buttons and get the message on sms and show it to you. This method is used when I am walking around.

So if you happened to see me walking around, smiling at you, mouthing the word "hi", yet you can't hear me. Dun panick, you are not deaf. It is juz that I am dumb/mute.

One of my friend (Soon Yong) commented : You communicate like icq like that.

My reply? *Sigh*Even icq got sound. Poor me. Hee...

Morbid Afternoon

Today is a non-stop-pouring day. Wanted to leave church after lunch but procastinated till 4pm, cos felt more safe and warm hiding indoors.

Talked to my best-est friend in church, Hui Ying. Talked about funny things as usual.

P.S: When you hear us talk, you will think we are two heretics! haha, actually we are juz playing a fool and talking nonsense. Hahahah. Thank God we dun go around doing that to everybody, hahaha, orelse someone may be fooled. hahahah

Well, today, we talked about what verse to put on our grave stones. hahahah. This girl is a copycat! Ok lah...We unanimously chose the same verse:

After thinking about the verse, I went one step further to think about what songs I want my friends and family to sing during my wake. Of course, it will be Karen top hit's- My Jesus, I love Thee. Be Thou my vision. AND Amazing grace.

Then I went yet another step further to suggest that maybe I can record my own video and be the worship leader of my own wake?!?

Hahahah...Anyway, after Vincent (Hui Ying's hubby) learned about this, He suggested that I record it tomorrow. Cos who knows when I will die? hahahah...I will seriously consider that.

Another hao2 jie3 mei4, Weiling suggested that I record the video while I am still young, so that I will be pretty onscreen. (Speaking about vanity....)

Okok...that's all for the morbid afternoon.

The Story of a young actress

It is the first time I read about the history of my favourite hymn.

The story of a young actress.

I was an actress too! Hee...yes yes. I was in the Chinese Drama Club for 4 years in St Nicks ,2 years in HCJC then another 3 years in Kent Ridge hall. (That is altogether 9 years (or more)! I remember acting in primary school and even kindergarden)

I dun think I can act well though. But I am definitely at ease with people looking at me while I "show off". That's explain why myHonors project supervisor said I am good in presentation.

But after I know Christ, I dun really like it that much anymore. I struggled to perform my last two musicals: Song to the Dawn and Beauty World.

I feel my mind not at ease when real people are suffering; and I merely portray them and feel happy about it. It is tremendous pressurising and heart-aching whenever I have to psycho myself into the characters of a cheap, money-minded cabaret girl (In Beauty World) or a poor woman crying for her dead son's spirit to come back (During a hungry ghost festival).

So I stopped acting.
Maybe will start doing it again when I resolve this matter within myself and with God.
Maybe I will be force to confront this matter when my future principal put me in charge of Drama Club.

I love to cook.

I like to cook chinese cuisine. But I realised that my chinese cuisine turned out to be more like fusion cuisine. I like to innovate and thus love to come out with novel dishes. One of my famous dish is named nu1 nai3 yu2, meaning milk fish or rather fish in milk.

hahaha. Sound novel?

I cooked this dish very often for my nus good friend cum hostel neighbour PeiChin. Everytime she eats it she will say :"good good". Even up to now, she will still mention about this spectacular dish.

Hee...I am so proud.

But this skill is acquired rather than I being a naturally talented cook. I failed several times. One of the failed dishes was done when I was in secondary school. It still leaves my sisters with nightmare (yes, even after 8 years).

This is what I did:
I add CORN FLOUR and SOYA SAUCE to (guess what?) FISHBALL!!! and I STEAMED it!!!

The fishballs were almost inedible.

Yesterday, I learnt that Thong, one of my church friend, has been reading my blog!

Well, Thong commented that my family is quite funny. So I reported this to dawny dawn when I went home that night.

"Funny?!?" my sister replied puzzledly. "What did you write that made him thinks so?"

"Ermm...maybe it is the photo of you as Xu Chun Mei? Or the post on Nag Challenge? Or maybe the one mentioning you played the chinese orchestra music early in the morning, with lyrics like "Oh, my son..."" I guessed.

What-I-call her: Dawny Dawn, Ah er, er jie( she is my mei mei, but the whole family call her er jie)

Characteristics: Like to punctuate her sentences with meowing and whoofing (crazy woman!)

Comments: A woman with wierd thinking and unsound judgement. (hahaha! She is going to kill me for saying that. But I am not the only one who thinks so) She can't stand boredom. That will really kill her. She needs excitement (sigh...). Also you must gives her a lot of attention but only when she demands of it. (That is the characteristics of a cat, no wonder she likes to meow...Sigh...)

What-I-call-her: Ah Qi, Zheng Ding Qi!!!

Characteristic: Like to buy a lot of clothes! And throw them away or give them to me with the price tag still on. Complusive buyer.

Comments: When she is irritated, she will scratch her head very violently and speak with many "aiya..". She is ,of course, well known for her complusive buying habits. Hahah. But I like, cos I will get the new clothes (that she dun wear) throughout the year. She is quite wise at times. Nobody willl expect that, especially she is the youngest in the family. But she will surprise us sometimes. hee..

Yes. It is true. Maybe because I only looked into the mirror twice a day. Once when I brush my teeth after I wake up and once when I brush my teeth before I sleep.

Alright, there are times when I "accidentally", "coincidentally", "un-intentionally" see my reflection from the public toilet mirrors. But, I dun really know how I look if the reflective surface (aka mirror) is out of my sight.

I wonder how I recognise myself from photos. I guess, I merely deduce that I am the "unfamiliar face" among the other people in the pictures. Hee...

When I see the photos I took some time back, I seriously dun remember that is how I look...

Hmm...is it exclusively my problem?

My friend, Jenny, freaked out when she saw that my blog's title is-- "elmo-eats-lala".

Reason?
My, 25-years-old-food-journalist, friend has a doll called "lala".

Yes, it is THE yellow character from teletubbies. Oh no...remember the show? The characters are all so gay!(not the meaning that is synonymous with "happy"), and they kept saying "Again! again"

Hahaha. The truth is my friend brings her doll wherever she goes. She had even brought her/it/he to a few church camps. So, she always jokingly says that her lala is a Christian doll. Hahaha.

Remind you again, she is 25 years old!?!

Ok...so she thought elmo is a cannibal.

The Tougher, The Better

I juz came back from Northern Thailand Mission Trip. I will consider this trip not a mission trip, strictly speaking. Cos the team din do much for the locals. In fact, we were juz there, watching how God works (had worked, is working and will work) in the hearts of the people. So, I will consider it an exposure and thanksgiving trip.

There are so many experiences to download. I will never finish mentioning them in one single blog posting. Well, I guess, I will mentioned a bit at a time.

What caught my eyes when our van first drove up the mountains was the sight of sheng4 dan4 hong2 (literal translation is Christmas Red). The trees have leaves are bright red and green in colour.

What is most fancinating about the trees are that the leaves get redder when the weather gets colder.

Imagine the sight of winter, when the earth is covered by white snow and the trees are withering. And there are these trees (sheng4 dan4 hong2) that gives the winter some warm and hope.

I was reminded of this verse:
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. " James 1:2-4

Christians must be like sheng4 dan4 hong2. Despite of difficuit times, we must still perserve and shine. There is this Christian native, Ya3 Du4 that I know from this trip. His precious son juz passed away at the age of 17. But he still perserves and continue to trust in God.

He shines brighter in times of hardship. Juz like sheng4 dan4 hong4.

Do you ever own something that is very uniquely you? What I mean is, if someone (not very close to you) is to find it, they will surely know it is yours?

When I was studying in NUS and staying in KR hall, I used to own a t-shirt. Nothing special about it. Itwas blue in colour (like 90% of my other t-shirts) with the word "Skateboard" (I dun skate) printed on it.

Nothing special. However, it seemed that everybody who knew me then (even superficially), thought that I existed (borned) together with the shirt. Well, maybe I wore it quite often (like every other day).

One day, I dropped the t-shirt on my way from the laundry(quite a distance from my block). I was not even aware of the lost untill this guy, came knocking at my room to return me my t-shirt.

That was rather disturbing. I dunno that guy very well. But he knew that was my shirt. He didn't see me dropped it, but he recognised it is mine! Very disturbing.

Well. I stopped wearing that shirt.

Not because of that.

Woke up today feeling joyful joyful. God has given me so so much. Without Him, I never appreciate how much I have, my family, my friends, my past and my future.

God has shown me that His grace is such a wonderful gift to me.

I never thought that the sunshine is so beautiful, and it shines on everyone (both the good and the bad)
I never thought my family is so wonderful (even with their flaws).
I never thought of my life as purposeful, but seems that it stretches till eternity.

Oh Lord, the wonderful gifts you bestow on me, so underserving, so underserving.

hahaha. Many of you will relate it to the "boring" subject called "chemistry" hahaha. Well, let me think of something to make it more interesting.

The former proposed model by JJ Thomson (I think) is called "plum pudding model". This analogy explains the electrons and protons all "clump together" to form the central core.

But pls...."plum pudding model" is so ang mo!!! Let's survey:

Can I have a show of hand who has seen a plum pudding before?
Nope? Not a single one? Neither do I.

So...must make it more relevant it us. So I call it the:

"watermelon" model.

Everybody in Singapore in the 21st century knows what a watermelon is. hee...

The current atomic structure shows the electrons spinning around the nucleus. I think they (the scientists) had not introduced it with an analogy. So I shall call it the :

"flies-surrounding-char-kuay-teow" model

So cool. So tropical. So Singapore. yay! National Education. hahaha

The flies are the electrons. The cockles (or hums) are the protons...but neutrons are not one massive kuay teow leh...

well...all analogies break down at some point. Big deal .

I like to watch Singapore Idol.

Not surprising, guess many people is addicted to it as well. Tonight's show is excited! Asian Pop. So maybe we'll get to hear Slyvester sing Chinese songs and realise that he speaks(sings) better chinese?

I like Taufik and Olinda and Daphine and of course sly... Hey! that's everybody. Guess from this week onward (in fact it starting from last week), watching Singapore Idol will be a sobbing experience for me.

Today is not normal.

I woke up at 6.30 because my father talked too loudly. Then, I actually got my first sms at 6.31 from my church friend who juz touched down Singapore (I think). So bizarre. Weird. Then I wanted to pray since I was awake, then I fell asleep again.

Then by 8, another bizarre thing happened. My house is in a big chao. My parents' mattress (seahorse brand) is in the living room, my sister is playing chinese orchestra (with singing like "oh my son...")

My mum is at home and very busy.

hmm...I must be dreaming. But sadly, I am not! My mother took leave to do spring cleaning. No quiet moment for today and tomorrow!?!

Sometimes I hope my mother will take leave to rest. Just rest. We are not only made for work, are we? Unrestfullness (is there such word) will result in bad temper, stress and depression-- A logic which is quite logical...

Read the papers the other day. There's this uncle, I think he opens resturants. (yes, with 's') He is supposingly also a gourmet. But guess what he can't live without for breakfast every morning?

Instant noodles!?!

I love instant noodles too! But not juz any brand. In fact, I only eat one type of instant noodles. That's is dadadadda (sound effect) chu qian yi ding!

The texture of the noodles is fantastic! It is not too thick and not too thin. Perfect! The taste of the noodles have juz the perfect amount of egg and flour. The chewiness is also perfect. Wonderful, marvelous, excellent, terrified, very good, perfect!

(I can smell the noodles simply when I see these descriptions! Can you? Oh...I am fainting....)

The soup base is not bad too. My favourite ones are the standard, spicy and curry favours. But I guess cos it is a Japanese brand, the curry favour is not like what we are familiar with. But with noodles texture that wonderful, the noodles has already score full marks!

But beware of the tom yam favour one. I think the soup is too acidic (I am a chemist), so the noodles texture is affected as a result.

Yummy Yummy. Dun add too much ingredients when you eat chu qian yi ding. Simply focus on enjoying the noodles. Alright, add an egg if you want. Yummy Yummy

Had great fun jam-ing in Young en and Shiwei's house the other day. It is so super fun to have a mini-jamming room with guiters, a keyboard and some drums. Wow! Sang a few unbiblical christian songs though...hee...one of it goes like this:
